Following on from our well-received series opener at London’s Kings Place last summer, our second Stoney Lane double-bill brought together Percy Pursglove’s new Far Reaching Dreams Trio, and the Hans Koller Quartet, featuring John O’Gallagher.
Percy’s trio, based on his large-scale Far Reaching Dreams of Mortal Souls choral project, featured Percy on both trumpet and bass, Paul Clarvis (drums) and Hans Koller (keys). Hans and Percy returned in the second set, joined by John O’Gallagher (alto) and Jeff Williams (drums) to make up Hans’ Quartet, performing material from the forthcoming Retrospection triple album.
“… it was a thrill to hear how their thought processes are starting to intertwine and coalesce … a creative cauldron in which new as yet unnamed tunes are constantly being brought to fascinating life. Their creative sparks and reflected flashes make for a constantly compelling and satisfying experience. Book/hear/enjoy this band.” – Sebastian Scotney, London Jazz News

We were also very lucky to welcome along Liz K Miller (pictured), the artist who created the brilliant artwork used on the cover of Hans’ Retrospection album.
“O’Gallagher and Williams’ partnership crackled as they pumped up the energy generating a grooving, anguished swing as the saxophonist explored, dissected and re-worked Koller’s pieces. They brought a whiff of fierce, serious-minded New York style exploration to the hall, matching Koller’s cerebral but thoroughly grounded, communicative approach. They closed the set on a distorted almost bluesey shuffling groover leaving the audience wanting more. ‘We’ve got another hard one’ said Koller. We cheered.”
